University Professor Emeritus Dr. Franz Jakob was honored at this year’s congress of the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) (https://ectsoc.org/) with the Philippe Bordier Prize 2025.

The prize is named after Dr. Philippe Bordier (1927–1977), who made internationally recognized contributions to the study of bone diseases through the development of bone histomorphometry. The ECTS awards this prize to researchers who have made significant clinical contributions to the study of diseases of bone and calcified tissues.

Prof. Franz Jakob served as a university professor for Clinical and Experimental Osteology at the Orthopedic Clinic König-Ludwig-Haus in Würzburg from 2001 to 2021. He is an internist, endocrinologist, and osteologist, and at the beginning of his clinical career, he completed additional training in endocrinological basic science at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Endocrinology in Hannover. His scientific work focused on clinical research and basic research in the field of stem cell biology and tissue regeneration, particularly related to diseases such as osteoporosis and the rare disease hypophosphatasia.

This internationally recognized award honors his lifelong professional achievements. Several national awards preceded this over the years, including the Pauwels Medal of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) in 2006, the Berthold Medal of the German Society for Endocrinology in 2022, and the Ühlinger Medal of the German Society for Osteology in 2023.

Since his retirement in 2021, he has been volunteering in the development of clinical guidelines and remains the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Osteologie/Osteology (Thieme), the publication of the umbrella organization of osteological societies (DVO) in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
